The Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE is the service centre and leading provider of trade training in the Far North region. This purpose-built facility of approximately 8000m2 was designed by TPG Architects, incorporating the highest possible environmental performance standards. State-of-the art information and communication technology and support structure was fully incorporated to the facility. With designated classrooms having access to computers, internet and wireless technology, the building features contemporary and flexible spaces that facilitate innovative trade training pedagogy and responds to the demands of users and industry.
The training centre exemplifies best industry practice by incorporating materials with reduced embodied energy along with passive design techniques that reduce energy and maintenance costs. For example, natural ventilation is achieved via a split roof which draws air through the building. Natural daylight is provided through polycarbonate roofing strips and vertical wall panels. Large roof overhangs northside and southside shade and protect the building whilst permitting diffused daylight, and rainwater is collected into large rainwater storage tanks and used for flushing of toilets and irrigation of the landscaping.
